So you think you know about fleet telematics?
It’s not hard right? You buy a tracker, you plug it in, you get a map, you know what’s happening on the ground.
What if I told you that there were over a dozen ‘types’ of trackers on the market. I’m not talking brands, I’m talking broad groups of trackers – sat, wireless, passive, cellular, Bluetooth, portable and versatile to name a few. Each one of them with vastly differing capabilities. Some come with bells, whistles and deep business insights. Others simply tell you where your vehicles are.
There is no doubt that the right telematics system will save your business time, money and produce better fleet efficiencies, but don’t make the mistake of thinking all GPS trackers are created equal and will deliver the business insights you need.
The danger of buying the wrong tracker is obvious. You find out too late that it doesn’t have the capability to tell you your fuel consumption, or that to shift it between vehicles will cost you 2 hours of the auto-elec’s time, or that when it goes into a mobile blackspot you will lose all your data. Did you know the more ports, the more data?
When comparing trackers look at how many input and output ports there are. The more ports the more information is being tracked and can be reported on. A tracker with no ports will be able to tell you location. A tracker with three or more ports will be able to tell you how much fuel is being used, refrigeration levels of the load, navigate drivers, driver compliance and pretty much any custom report you can think of.
Did you know that not all trackers transmit live data?
Not all trackers will transmit your data live. Look carefully at what language is used to describe transmission.
- Live data is updated every 60 seconds.
- Delayed data is updated every 15 minutes.
- Passive data needs to be manually downloaded.
Did you know some fleet telematics systems can handle blackspots…. and some can’t?
Australia is a massive country and even with recent improvements to our 3G network, there are still mobile blackspots to operate within. Some GPS trackers will simply switch off. They will not collect data and you will be blind to the events that happened during that period. Other GPS trackers will continue to record the information and store it, transmitting it once the vehicle is back in coverage, so no data is lost.
Other trackers have the ability to connect to satellite phone systems.
Did you know that some trackers can be shared between vehicles?
Remember we talked about ports? More ports means richer, more insightful reporting. But there is a benefit to trackers without ports – portability. These trackers don’t require an auto-electrician to install them, you can do it yourself, giving you the freedom to move them between machines. These trackers are ideal for companies working on a tight budget, only needing the most basic of reporting or tracking vehicles and equipment on an ad hoc basis.
